It is very timid and tries to keep in shelter. It is no wonder, that it is difficult for finding out it in a twilight thicket of a wood.

As well as other monkeys, macaques live in groups from 12 up to 20 individuals. Shout of the mail is similar to the shout of a person, who lost the way in a wood and calls for his satellites.

Periyar is rich with ornithofauna too. There are about 200 kinds of birds total. Grey and white herons, halcyons and cormorants can be seen on the stubs sticking out of the water. In woods around the lake it is possible to see many other kinds of birds. It is necessary to note with satisfaction, that among 75-90 thousand of tourists annually visit Periyar.
