Rameswaram Holidays India

If you want to enjoy your holidays in India, holidays in Rameswaram could give you the true flavour of India. It is a very nice place to visit for all those who are interested in the historical aspect of Indian life. India is a place which has a very rich history.

Rameswaram is a small town, located on a peninsula (almost on an island) and it is a unique place with a unique history.

Perhaps, this city of India is the most interesting in the historical attitude. This city juts out into the sea (the Manar Gulf of Indian ocean) and the nearest to the island of Ceylon.

It is a historically very important city and you would love to spend your time here.

Enjoy your time here. This small sleeping fishing town as the tourist literature speaks about it, with the population only of 35 thousand people, is the centre of the pilgrimage, on value equal to Benares.

People name it “southern Varanasi”. Just as people come to Varanasi to find a clearing in waters of the River Ganges, it is considered, that sacred water of the wells of Rameswaram’s temple washes off all sins.

The temple of sacred Rama clears the pilgrims just as Shiva once has released Rama from a sin of murder of its enemy - a demon Ravan. Rameswaram is concentrated around of he Ramanathasvami Temple, where there is the same deity Shiva, to which the Lord Rama worshipped.

The temple is well known for the so-called third corridor, the longest in the world architecture. It is unique also because inside of the temple there is 22 reservoirs with sacred water, created by  Rama himself.

The pilgrims accept ablution in them. In 13 kilometers from Rameswaram there is a place called Danushkodi. Here begins the utmost limit.

Sandy band in the width in 100-300 meters lasts 20 kilometers till that place, where the cool Indian Ocean meets warm waters of Bay of Bengal.

And once here was located a beautiful city with Hindus temples and Christian churches, with the railway up to the end of the ground. But the ocean was washed off all this in 1964 when a typhoon struck here.

The ocean is the owner here, and it is very much felt. The local fishermen do not build anything more seriously than huts of palm leaves, because it will be for a while.
